Technique: General

Technique: Freestyle Kick

  • For ages I have thought that the differences in fat distribution in the legs of males and females must partly explain why females are often very fast at Kicking drills. This article, MALE BUOYANCY CHARACTERISTICS ARE NOT RELATED TO KICKING DIFFERENCES WHEN COMPARED TO FEMALES reports on a study which found that bouyancy differences between the sexes do not affect kick performance. Further reading indicates that ankle flexibility IS a factor however. I suppose that because females are often believed to be inherently more flexible than males, this perhaps explains it.
  • The Flutter Kick - great article explaining why some people have a poor kick, why some people (like me) bend their knees too much (insufficient ankle flexibility) and what to do about it (stretching)
  • Truth About Fins - site selling fins but also explaining a bit about ankle flexibility and how to measure it.
  • Swimbits newletter article about ankle, hip and shoulder flexibility and how to improve it
  • kick-bored - Terry Laughlin (of Total Immersion fame) article on kicking. Explains that kick is often NOT what is holding people back and that body position is essential to get right first. But then goes on to endorse fins as a means of improving ankle flexibility and therefore kick.

Swimming Shops and Gear

  • Swimshop - "UK's largest mail order company, for all you swimming needs." Swimshop in Luton finally have an online shop! I've not tried it yet but they have had a reliable mail order business for years, so every reason to expect this to be as good. They also offer a Privilege Account scheme, which gives 20% off most products when purchased through a club. Their phone number is still 01582 562 111
  • All Ear Plugs - site selling earplugs suitable for swimming
